To the left is a November, 2002
photo, by Joyce White. It features the UK's principal Beer Hunt
organisers, i.e. from left to right, they are: John White (1945-),
of White Beer Travels; Podge, of Podge's Belgian Beer Tours (see below); and Simon van Tromp, of Beer
Traveller Tours (see below).
White Beer Travels, Beer
Traveller Tours, and Podge, all
ran trips featuring what was possibly the world's best Beer Festival,
the Antwerp 24-Hour Beer Festival (which is now replaced by
one in Sint-Niklaas, which is readily reached from Antwerp by
train, click here for more details. This photo was taken at the 24-Hour. Note the Achouffe stand
in the background, a brewery that produces magnificent beers in
the Belgian Ardennes, www.achouffe.be.

For details of
White Beer Travels Beer Hunts featuring the Zythos Bier Festival, the replacement
for the Antwerp 24-Hour Beer Festival, click here. The 24-Hour festival
was run by OBP, Belgium's premier beer consumers' organisation,
which unfortunately had to be wound up, in December, 2002.
Click here for a statement from Peter
Crombecq, OBP's founder and liquidator, giving more details. The
Zythos Beer Festival ( www.zbf.be, White Beer Travels Web page) is run by OBP's successor, Zythos ( www.zythos.be).

The Beer Traveller Tours & Publication website, www.beertraveller.com,
and Simon's blog site, provide full details of Beer Traveller Beer Hunts and also how
to get hold of Simon's excellent "Beer Traveller" books,
such as those on West Flanders and "South West Netherlands
and Beyond", shown on the left. Do not confuse Simon's site
with a similarly named American one: www.beertravelers.com.
The latter provides good coverage of outlets for Speciality Beer,
in the USA, where it is called Craft Beer or Specialty Beer. Click here
for details of a White Beer Travels trip to Denver, Colorado,
which gives information on a companion book to this latter website. |
Podge's
Belgian Beer Tours are based in Chelmsford, England
Chris (Podge) Pollard, who describes
himself as a "Beer Investigator", has been running
trips to Belgium since 1994. Podge is the Chairman of the Chelmsford
and Mid-Essex branch of CAMRA, www.chelmsfordcamra.org.uk. Podge and Tim Webb (Good Beer Guide Belgium) are the co-authors of a May, 2004 book entitled LambicLand LambikLand, which covers Lambic Bars, Breweries and Blenders, including how to get to them. More details of this don't-enter-the Pajottenland-without book are to be found on Tim's "books about beer" website, www.booksaboutbeer.com, and in a White Beer Travels Web page featuring it. Also featured on this White Beer Travels Web page is Podge and Siobhan McGinn's Around Bruges in 80 Beers. These books can be purchased from Tim's site along with his Good Beer Guide Belgium, which can also be purchased from CAMRA (www.camra.org.uk), from www.amazon.co.uk, or from www.amazon.com.

To the left, is Podge, in one of his trademark
patterned, coloured shirts, for another, see above.
It shows him discussing the itinerary for his June, 2002
Beer Tour with Yves Benoit, who is responsible for quality
in the Bavik-De Brabandere Brewery (www.bavik.be),
in Bavikhove, Belgium. The photo was taken by John White
on the tour, in June, 2002. Full details on what was a truly excellent
tour can be found on the
Recce Trips page. The section of this page covering the trip
includes a photo of Yves drawing off a sample of one of the blend
components of the Brewery's Petrus Oud Bruin, which Podge's
group were very privileged to taste - a wonderful and rare drinking
experience. The White Beer Travels trip to Bavik, a year later
is covered in the Past Beer Hunts
page. |
